2006 CHRISTMAS IN JULY Z CAR RUN REPORT
What a Great weekend!
It all started with us meeting up at the Gap Village Shopping Centre at 6.45am. Everyone was fired up and ready to go. Last minute bugs were sorted in a couple of cars, directions and name tags were handed out then we were away.
The trip up through Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious was great fun with lots of twists and turns to keep the driver occupied and plenty of beautiful early morning mountain scenes to keep the passengers inspired. The trip down the other side was just as good, but care had to be taken as some of the road was damp from previous rainfall.
The trip around Somerset Dam was shrouded in a thick blanket of fog which made for a bit of excitement!
Our first stop was at Bethany, the home of Joe & Flo Bjelke-Peterson where we were plied with pumpkin scones and much information about the former Premier of Qld.
We were taken to to top of the property by John, one of Jo's sons and given an interesting talk about Jo's life and also a lot of interesting facts about Kingaroy and the surrounding area. Perched on the top of the hill, it was an ideal opportunity for a group car shot!
Next we headed to the Booie Range Distillery just outside Kingaroy for lunch. The distillery boasts a beautiful view from its front balcony, and the food, while a little slow getting to us was quite tasty.
After lunch we fuelled up and headed south for Bunya. The trip took us through some very interesting terrain, changing from open plain to full on rain forest. The roads leading into Dandabah, our final destination, were windy, hilly and narrow but in most cases well sealed.. . what more could a Z driver ask for! I was positioned behind our illustrious Vice-President, and had to concentrate to stay in contact : )
Once at Dandabah, we were introduced to our cabins, all well appointed comfortable and most importantly with a wood fire! After putting dibs on a bed Anne and I went for a quick walk to one of the look-outs to take in some views. . Magnificent!! On the way back to our accommodation we heard some strange bird calls that were identified by Paul, one of our fellow cabin mates, as a Cat Bird. The bird life at Dandabah was fairly spectacular with King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas, Whip and Cat birds along with the usual Kookaburra and Carrawongs. |

After our walk it was time to prepare Xmas Dinner! we were all busied heating and arranging platters of goodies for the evenings feast. And what a feast it was! If you left the Hutch (the party venue) hungry, you must have fallen asleep in a corner somewhere and missed the food, because there was plenty of everything for everybody!
Raffles were held with many prizes including 2 extra special limited edition Z Club Caps. . ... why were they extra special? . . because I won one!. . Im now trying to talk the price up so that I can sell it and buy another Z!
The Party house (The Hutch) was decorated and organised by a number of our group and special thanks should go to Dave, Bec and Jano who put in a lot of time to make it a special event for us all. Thanks also to all those who took the time to prepare a special dish to bring along for the feast!
Next morning we breakfasted at the Cider Gum Restaurant before heading for Rimfire Vineyards and Winery.
The winery was a nice little spot with some very interesting wines including a wine made from a variety that the owners had found growing on the property. They aren't sure what variety this particular grape was and even had it DNA tested to try and find out, but the tests were inconclusive, so it was name 1893.
Anne & I purchased a whole case of wine, but it was only to add a bit of weight to the back of the Z which had been bouncing around a little. . .honest!
The winery also proved to be a good spot for another photo shoot!
From here we formed up our convoy and headed for Ravensbourne and Sketches Restaurant for lunch.
Again the roads were good for the Z driver and the directions handed out by Dave were clear and easy to follow. .. I dont think we lost a single car all weekend. .. well, none that we didn't find again anyway.
Again Id like to thank all involved in the organisation of the weekend with a special thanks to Dave, Bec and Jano.
Cheers - Simon
